Privacy policy
Effective date: June 11, 2026
This is the privacy policy for Joe Tries (joetries.com). It explains what information is collected when you use this site, including the blog, the product catalog, the home builder, and accounts, and how it is handled. The short version: we collect the minimum needed to run the site, analytics only run if you accept them, and we never sell your data.
Who runs this site
Joe Tries is run by Joe Tries LLC, and written by one person working on his own house. You can reach me at joe@joetries.com.
What this site collects
Browsing. Reading the blog or browsing the catalog requires no personal information. No name, no email, nothing.
Accounts. If you create an account to save or publish a home, we collect your email address and a password. The password is stored hashed (scrambled in a way that cannot be reversed); nobody, including us, can read it. Account data lives in our database, hosted by Supabase in the United States.
Homes you build. The rooms, devices, names, and notes in a home you save are stored with your account. They stay private unless you choose to publish, and you can make a published home private again at any time. You can ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it by emailing joe@joetries.com.
Feedback and suggestions. If you use the feedback button or suggest a product, we store what you write and the page you were on, along with basic technical information: your browser type and a one-way hashed version of your IP address (scrambled so it cannot be turned back into your real address). We use this only to act on your input and to keep the forms free of spam and abuse. You do not need an account to send either one.
Hosting and security. The site is hosted on Vercel and our database is hosted by Supabase. To deliver the site and protect it from abuse, these providers automatically process basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you request. This is standard for any website and is covered by Vercel's privacy policy and Supabase's privacy policy.
Analytics, only with your consent. This site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages get used. Analytics is OFF by default: no analytics cookies are set unless you choose Accept on the consent banner, and declining keeps them off while the site works normally. If you accept, Google collects information such as your IP address, the pages you view, and general device details, as a service provider. You can read how Google handles this at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and opt out everywhere with Google's browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Cookies and your browser's storage
If you log in, the site sets strictly necessary cookies that keep you signed in; they exist only to make your account work. Google Analytics cookies are set only after you accept them on the consent banner. Nothing here is an advertising cookie, and no data is used to show you ads.
Some features also save data in your own browser's local storage rather than on our servers: a home you draft before signing up, your compare-list picks, your consent choice, and small interface preferences. That data stays on your device, and clearing your browser data removes it.
Links to other websites
This site links out to other websites, such as product pages, manufacturer sites, retailers, and forums. Some retailer links may be affiliate links, which means the retailer may set its own cookies after you click through and we may earn a commission on a purchase, as explained on our disclosure page at joetries.com/disclosure. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and this policy does not cover them.
What we never do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with anyone except the service providers named above, which process it only to run this site. We do not use your data for advertising.
Children
This site is written for adult homeowners and is not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect any information from children.
Your choices
You can decline analytics on the consent banner, or change your mind by clearing this site's data in your browser, which resets the banner. You can block or delete cookies in your browser at any time. You can make a published home private again whenever you want. And you can ask us to delete your account and everything attached to it, or to show you what we hold about you, by emailing joe@joetries.com; we will act on it within 30 days.
Changes to this policy
If the site starts collecting more information, for example by adding a newsletter or comments, this policy will be updated and the effective date at the top will change. It is worth checking back if you want to stay current.
